North Dakota Medicare beneficiaries have new option this fall

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota (BCBSND) is helping bring a new, robust Medicare Advantage plan to residents. Our new affiliate, NextBlue of North Dakota (NextBlue) will have Medicare Advantage products available during the annual election period October 15 through December 7, for coverage that begins January 1, 2021.

During its inaugural year, NextBlue will offer coverage in five North Dakota counties: Burleigh, Cass, Morton, Richland, and Stutsman.

A + B + D = C

Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, combines traditional Medicare—parts A and B and many times D—into one easy-to-manage plan. NextBlue plans are undergoing final approval but may include extra benefits such as coverage for:

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Dental
  • Fitness programs
  • Personal Emergency Response systems
  • Over-the-counter supplies and medication (OTC)
  • National and international travel coverage
  • Health management assistance
  • Telehealth

An important option for North Dakotans

Medicare Advantage plans are popular nationally, however, previously, the state has had limited access to this option.

According to Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Medicare Advantage enrollment has doubled in the past decade with more than one-third (36%) of Medicare beneficiaries nationwide enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan in 2020. In North Dakota only 18% of Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.

With NextBlue, North Dakotans will have access to Medicare Advantage plans made for North Dakotans by North Dakotans.
