Health Insurance Marketplace

October 13, 2013 Ryan Schuster

North Dakotans now have a new option when purchasing health insurance. A new marketplace (also referred to as an exchange) that launched in October 2013 allows North Dakotans to search for, compare and purchase health insurance online. Open enrollment for coverage on the marketplace began October 1, 2013, with coverage taking effect as early as January 2014. You can also call a toll-free number (1-800-318-2596) to go through the enrollment process instead of completing it online. If you prefer, you can also complete a paper application or seek help from someone in your area to help you understand your options and complete an application for marketplace coverage.

Like all states, North Dakota has its own marketplace where insurance companies can sell up to five different levels of health insurance plans, and associated variation, depending upon the amount of coverage and cost. These marketplaces are voluntary. If you wish to continue purchasing health insurance through your employer (if your employer offers health insurance benefits) or individual insurance on your own directly from an insurance company, you can still do so.

The North Dakota marketplace provides another option for those searching for health insurance coverage. Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota offers quality, affordable health insurance plans both on the online marketplace and directly to employers and individuals.
