Why 26 is a big year for health insurance
Turning 26 includes an important milestone in a young adult's life. It's the age when they can no longer be included on their Parents' health insurance plan. But, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota has plenty of options to help them stay covered.
26th birthday = qualifying life event
Turning 26 is a qualifying life event. This means you can buy insurance outside of the annual open enrollment period. But, you must request coverage within 60 days of turning 26.
Cost of going without insurance
Young adults often think of themselves as invincible. But, there are major costs for NOT having health insurance.
"Chancing it" without health insurance can mean hundreds or possibly thousands in government penalty fees—all for nothing in return. In fact, the fine for being uninsured is a minimum of $695 per individual or 2.5 percent of income, whichever is greater.
Plus, costs for health care add up quickly. Treatment for something as common as a broken leg costs an average of just over $23,000.
