More and more, health care consumers want to shop for health services the same way they shop for retail goods and services. With that in mind, we've created Care Comparison, a cost transparency tool that gives members comparative average cost information for many inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic treatment categories.
Why Does BCBSND Offer This Tool?
Fueled by the increase of consumer-driven health plans, higher out-of-pocket expenses for consumers and a retail health care environment, employers and consumers are looking for ways to decrease health care costs while maintaining quality of care. In response, this tool will better educate members about estimated health care costs while maintaining quality of care.
Where Can Members Find the Information?
Members can log in to the secure member web portal at www.bcbsnd.com, choose a treatment category, select a ZIP code and find facilities that offer the selected treatment(s). The information contains estimated cost ranges for a variety of common, elective treatment options and conditions, including facility, professional and ancillary procedures.
How does BCBSND get the data used in Care Comparison?
The estimated cost data is based on one year's worth of BCBSND participating provider claims information and will be updated on a 6-month basis.
What Methodology is Used?
Care Comparison uses inclusion/exclusion methodology to represent typical costs for select services. A list of Data Exclusions is available on this website.
