How to Protect Yourself from a Substance Use Rehab Scheme

Avoid Scams

Finding the right rehab center for substance addiction is crucial. North Dakotans seeking treatment for substance use are urged to exercise caution and conduct thorough research when selecting a rehab facility.

By working closely with BCBSND and asking the right questions, you can protect yourself from these out-of-state scams and find a reputable facility that offers the care you need. Here are the top tips for avoiding a scam:

  • Verify that the facility is licensed and fully accredited.
  • Ensure the facility participates with your insurance plan.
  • Inquire about the specific treatment programs offered, staff credentials and aftercare support.

In addition to following these tips, North Dakotans should look for these red flags to avoid falling victim to potential scams.

  • Body brokering: Unsolicited recruiters promising lavish treatment at little or no cost.
  • Offers to pay for flights or provide free/low-cost accommodation and employment guarantees post-treatment.

Members can use these questions to find the treatment that works best for them.

  • Is the facility licensed and fully accredited?
  • Does the facility participate with your insurance company?
  • What sort of treatment programs are offered (intensive outpatient, medical detox, partial hospitalization program, etc.)?
  • What sort of training and credentials does the staff have (are there MDs/NPs on-site, therapists etc.)?
  • How long are treatment programs on average?
  • What does aftercare look like and how does the facility assist with that?
