Drug shortages can occur due to manufacturing and quality problems, delays and discontinuations. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) keeps track of drug shortages. Manufacturers provide concerns about drug shortages to the FDA so they can proactively work together to address them.

A drug recall is the most effective way to protect the public from a defective or potentially harmful product. A recall is a voluntary action taken by a company to remove a defective drug product from the market or warn patients and consumers about a potential risk.
