Applications for Maternal Health Grants are open now through April 30

FARGO, N.D. The health and well-being of mothers is crucial to the vitality of families and communities. Their well-being influences the health of future generations, shaping the future of our society.

In 2021, the majority of mothers (59%) experienced at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE), according to the “Health and Well-Being in North Dakota Closeup” study conducted by North Dakota State University (NDSU) Center for Social Research and funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota (BCBSND) Caring Foundation. Additionally, 29% of mothers reported three or more ACEs. Research has shown that if a child experiences multiple forms of adversity, it can lead to various health problems in adulthood.

Although North Dakota women generally rank well in health and well-being compared to national statistics, there are still gaps in care for mothers and children. To address these barriers, the BCBSND Caring Foundation is accepting nominations for its Maternal Health Grants. These grants provide funding to nonprofit and community-based organizations dedicated to reducing inequalities before, during and after pregnancy. Aiming to make a lasting impact on the lives of women and their families, these grants seek to reduce maternal health disparities and improve outcomes across the state. Three grants will be awarded to organizations driving change in maternal health.

"Ensuring the health and well-being of mothers is essential to building stronger families and therefore better communities. Through our Maternal Health Grants, we want to recognize and support organizations that are making a difference in the lives of moms and babies. Every mother deserves access to the care and resources she needs for a healthy pregnancy, a safe delivery and a strong start for her baby," said Dan Conrad, BCBSND Caring Foundation Board Chair and BCBSND President and CEO.

The four-question application asks for contact info, organization mission and list of services. Find the application at bcbsnd.com/MaternalHealthGrants. Applications must be submitted by Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at 5 p.m. (CST). The application is a simple, streamlined process to be respectful of the time and resources of the organizations we serve.
