To help reduce waste, starter kits and maintenance supplies should be billed separately at the appropriate time. Providers' billing claims through the pharmacy benefit should not bill a maintenance supply at the same time as a starter kit is dispensed when the starter kit already includes that supply. For example, if a tubeless insulin pump starter kit includes a 30-day supply, the maintenance supply should not be billed until 70% or more is utilized (Day 21 or later after the initial fill).
