Reminder: Billing Unrelated Evaluation and Management Services During a Global Maternity Period

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota (BCBSND) wants to remind providers, Evaluation and Management (E/M) services provided during a global maternity period may be reported separately when the service is unrelated to routine maternity care or is performed to address a separately identifiable condition. These services must be clearly documented and billed with the appropriate inpatient or outpatient E/M code. When applicable, append modifier 24 to indicate the E/M service is unrelated to the global maternity period, and report the condition unrelated to pregnancy as the primary diagnosis code.

If an unrelated E/M service is billed during the global maternity period without the appropriate modifier, the E/M service or the global maternity service may be rejected.
