Description
Decompression is a surgical procedure that is performed to alleviate pain caused by pinched nerves (neural impingement).
During a lumbar decompression back surgery, a small portion of the bone over the nerve root and/or disc material from under the nerve root is removed to give the nerve root more space and provide a better healing environment.
Discectomy is a surgical procedure in which one (1) or more intervertebral discs are removed. Extrusion of an intervertebral disc beyond the intervertebral space can compress the spinal nerves and result in pain, numbness, and weakness. Discectomy is intended to treat symptoms by relieving pressure on the affected nerve root(s).
Discectomy can be performed by a variety of surgical approaches, with either open surgery or minimally invasive techniques.
