Medicaid Expansion Work Requirements: What Providers Need to Know

As noted in the previous HealthCare News (HCN) article Coming Soon- Medicaid Expansion Member Eligibility Requirement Change a change is coming for some Medicaid Expansion members beginning Jan. 1, 2027.

North Dakota Medicaid Expansion members ages 19 to 64 may need to complete work or other qualifying activities to keep their coverage but note most members will not be affected. The North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services is the primary source for information; members will need to confirm exclusions and eligibility through North Dakota Medicaid.

Qualifying Activities
Some members may need to complete 80 hours per month of one or a combination of the following activities:

  • Paid employment
  • Education, enrolled at least half-time in a career/technical education program
  • Job training or workforce programs
  • Volunteer work or community service

Note: Many members will not be required to meet these requirements.

How Providers Can Help
Providers play an important role in helping members stay informed and maintain access to care. When appropriate, encourage members to:

  • Keep their address, phone number, and email up to date
  • Open and read all mail from North Dakota Medicaid
  • Watch for future updates regarding coverage requirements

Taking these steps can help members stay informed about their coverage and any actions they may need to take.
