What is preventive care

Preventive care is routine care that helps catch or prevent health issues early. That way people can stay healthier and avoid more serious (and costly) problems later.

5 types of preventive care

  1. Exams and wellness visits track your health over time to spot issues early

  2. Screenings look for health problems before you feel sick

  3. Vaccinations help protect you from diseases

  4. Counseling and support services help make positive changes

  5. Preventive medications can reduce your risk of serious conditions

Types of care to explore at every stage of life

As you age, preventive care can help you stay on top of your health.

Choose an age group to explore recommended care. You can also ask your provider about what is right for you.

When you might have to pay for care

There are a few instances when you might have to pay when you go in for a preventive care visit. These include but aren’t limited to:

  • Your visit becomes diagnostic care, which means your doctor has to check symptoms or possible health problem.

  • You use an out-of-network provider.

  • The preventive care service is not part of recommended guidelines.

  • Required approvals are not completed.
